Materials · Polypropylene

Vapor smoothing polypropylene (PP) parts.

Polypropylene vapor smoothing reflows the rough surface of a 3D printed PP part into a smoother, closed skin. Polypropylene resists the agents that smooth nylon, so PostPro uses a dedicated one: FA9202. PostPro systems smooth PP printed by MJF · SLS1.

Why PP is different

Chemically resistant, so it needs its own agent.

Polypropylene is light, tough and resistant to many chemicals, which is why it is printed for fluid parts, clips and housings. The same resistance means an agent tuned for nylon will not smooth it.

  1. A dedicated agent

Dedicated consumable for finishing polypropylene parts3: FA9202, listed for the SFX, SF50, SF100.

  2. A closed, cleanable surface

Reflowing the surface closes the open texture of printed PP, so parts are easier to clean and look finished.

  3. Published on two PP powders

AMT has published vapor smoothing whitepapers on BASF Ultrasint PP and on Ricoh PP printed by SLS.

  4. Same four-stage cycle

Conditioning, processing, curing and drying, as for every PostPro material.4

Agents and systems

Which machine runs FA9202.

Polypropylene from MJF and SLS runs with FA9202. AMT lists FA9202 for the SFX, SF50 and SF100; for the SF2X, ask.

Questions

Polypropylene vapor smoothing: questions.

Short answers from AMT’s published material lists. Anything else, ask an engineer.

Can polypropylene 3D prints be vapor smoothed?

Yes. Polypropylene printed by MJF · SLS1 is vapor smoothed on PostPro systems with the dedicated FA9202 agent.

Which consumable is used for PP?

FA9202. Dedicated consumable for finishing polypropylene parts3.

Which PostPro machines run FA9202?

AMT lists FA9202 for the SFX, SF50, SF1001. Confirm the configuration for your machine with AMT, especially for the SFX and SF2X.

Why can’t PP use the same agent as nylon?

Polypropylene resists the agents that smooth nylon and other polar plastics, so it needs an agent chosen for it.
